You’re replying to a critical message on your laptop. Coordinating with your team. Everything is flowing…
And suddenly - logged out.
Not just on WhatsApp. Potentially on any messaging app you use via web or desktop.
Why is this happening?
India’s telecom regulator, Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has proposed a new security measure:
Messaging apps must remain linked to the active SIM used during registration.
Under this proposal, companion services like WhatsApp Web or desktop apps may auto-log out every six hours if the SIM linkage isn’t verified.
The Security Argument
From a security and governance perspective, DoT believes this move could:
Reduce online fraud using inactive or recycled numbers
Improve traceability of communications
Strengthen national security controls
On paper, it sounds reasonable - tighter identity linkage often means fewer abuse vectors.
The Productivity Concern
Critics, however, raise valid concerns:
Frequent re-logins could interrupt daily workflows
Multi-device users, travelers, and eSIM users may face access issues
The inconvenience may affect millions, while preventing only a subset of fraud cases
For professionals who rely heavily on desktop-based messaging, this could become a daily friction point.
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t just about messaging apps.
It’s about a growing tension between security and usability.
Every new control improves safety - but often at the cost of convenience.
The real challenge is finding a balance that protects users without disrupting how we work and communicate every day.
So, what do you think?
Is this a necessary step toward safer digital communication? Or a productivity killer that overcorrects the problem?
Security and convenience are about to collide - and the outcome will affect all of us.
